Automotive Safety Inspections
Generally speaking, a safety check is a brief but comprehensive inspection of your car’s vital features. In order to operate your vehicle legally on Maui roads, you must meet all state requirements. Otherwise, you will not be issued a safety tag.

Safety Check Lahaina is a stand alone automotive safety inspection station. We do not provide repair on any vehicle.The vehicle owner is solely responsible for maintaining their own automobile, NEV, or trailer prior to bringing your vehicle in for inspection. We do not make the State Laws, however we are an official licensed inspection station that abides by ALL State and County Vehicle Safety Codes and Laws.
We recommend that you review the process prior to your vehicle inspection.
The Process:
Hawaii requires all registered motor vehicles to pass an annual safety inspection. The safety check ensures your vehicle meets state road safety and emissions standards. Without a valid safety inspection, you cannot renew your vehicle registration.
Required Documents to Bring:
Current Vehicle Registration (or the most recent expired registration)
Proof of Hawaii Motor Vehicle Insurance (must be valid and present in the vehicle)
Inspection Fee: Passenger Vehicles & NEV's: $25.75 tax, Trailers $17.75
The Safety Inspection Checklists
Passenger Vehicle Requirements
Lights & Electrical: All headlights (high/low beams), tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, hazard lights, and license plate lights must function properly and not be cracked or have any moisture or colored tape over them.
Tires & Wheels: Minimum tire tread depth passing minimum is (2/32"), and tires must be free of major sidewall damage, all lug bolts in place and not be protruding past the wheel well fenders.
Brakes: Functionality of both the service brakes (foot pedal) and the parking/emergency brake will be tested.
Auto Glass & Mirrors: Windshields must be free of major visual obstructions, cracks, or chips. All window tint must comply with Hawaii state laws, 35% Front Driver / Passenger, 70% Windshield. All rearview and side mirrors must be securely mounted and provide clear visibility. Stickers must not obscure the driver's view.
Safety Equipment: The horn must be loud enough to be safely heard, windshield wipers must work, and all seat belts must latch properly.
Structural Integrity: Doors, hood, and trunk latches must work; fenders and bumpers must be securely mounted.
Engine & Exhaust: The exhaust system must not have leaks or be excessively loud, and fuel systems will be checked for leaks or damage.
Steering & Suspension: Must operate smoothly without excessive wear, looseness, or damage in the ball joints, tie rods, or shock absorbers.
Vehicle instrument panel Gauges and warning indicators do not indicate low fuel, excessive engine temperature, low oil pressure, charge battery, etc.
Convertible and Jeep type vehicles: Canopy top must be engaged in the closed and locked position covering the passenger compartment
Fluids All fluids must be at a reasonable level, NOT empty. Oil, Transmission Fluid, Steering Fluid and Windshield Wash Fluid.
Newly Arrived Out-of-State Vehicles
If you recently shipped your car to Hawaii, it will typically "fail" the initial safety inspection simply because the vehicle is not yet registered in the state. This is a normal part of the process. You will take the "failed" inspection report and your out-of-state documentation to your local DMV to complete your Hawaii registration, after which you will return to get your passing safety sticker.
Trailer Safety Check Requirements
During the inspection, the station will check the trailer for road safety compliance. Key components include:
VIN Tag: The trailer must have a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) visibly displayed on the frame to pass.
Lighting: Two rear reflectors (one left, one right), a license plate light, and stop lights (if the towing vehicle's lights are blocked). Trailers 30 feet or longer require additional intermediate side marker lamps.
Fenders/Mud Flaps: Devices designed to minimize the spray or splash of water and mud to the rear.
Safety Chains/Cables: Required coupling and mounting devices must have an ultimate strength equal to the gross weight of the trailer.
Brakes: Any trailer with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 3,000 lbs requires an emergency breakaway braking system.
Trailers under 10,000 lbs GVWR: Require an annual inspection at an authorized county vehicle safety station
Trailers 3,001 to 10,000 lbs GVWR
Breakaway System: Emergency braking system required.
Safety Chains: Must have cables/chains and a coupling with strength at least equal to the trailer's total gross weight.
VIN Plate: Must be visibly attached to the frame.
Lighting: Clearances lamps (24–60 inches high), side markers visible from 200 ft, and stop lights/reflectors visible in darkness.
(1) Two front clearance lamps, one on each side (24 to 60 inches high, unless the trailer is less than 24 inches high);
(2) Two side marker lamps on each side (front and rear); in darkness, they must be visible 200 feet from vehicle;
(3) Two rear clearance lamps, one on each side;
(4) Two side reflectors on each side (front and rear): in darkness, they must be visible 200 feet at night with upper beam headlamps shining on them;
(5) Two rear reflectors on each side;
(6) At least one stoplight visible night or day for 100 feet;
(7) Light illuminating license plate;
(8) Brakes that are actuated from the tow vehicle, and in the event of a breakaway, the brakes must self-actuate;
(9) Fenders, covers or devices, including flaps or splash aprons, unless the body of the vehicle or attachments thereto afford adequate protection to effectively minimize the spray or splash of water or mud to the rear of the vehicle; or
(10) Safety chains or cables and accompanying coupling and mounting devices with an ultimate strength equal at least to the gross weight of the trailer.
Trailers over 10,000 lbs GVWR: Classified as commercial motor carrier vehicles and require a commercial/DOT annual inspection. (Safety Check Lahaina is not Licensed for this Service)
NEV (Neighborhood Electric Vehicle Requirements)
Inspectors use the standard vehicle checklist, but tailor it specifically for NEVs:
Batteries: Must be secure and separated from the cabin. The system must be vented, and terminals must be free of excessive corrosion and tightly connected.
Mandatory NEV Signage: Your NEV must have a permanently attached or painted sign visible to the driver stating it cannot exceed 25 mph and cannot be driven on roads with speed limits over 35 mph.(We offer these for purchase)
Safety Equipment: Inspectors will check standard road-legal components like headlamps (high beams are not required for NEVs), horn, brake lights, turn signals, tires, and seatbelts, either Type 1 (lap belt or Type 2 lap / shoulder required.

The actual inspection usually takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on your vehicle's condition. If your vehicle passes but your registration is expired, we will issue a temporary certificate so as to allow you to visit the DMV conveniently located just down the road at the Lahaina Gateway.

Notably, if you fail the first time, most stations offer free re-inspections within 30 days.
